Signs of a tooth infection
An abscess is a pocket of infection at the root of a tooth or in the gum. These are the most common signs.
Throbbing pain
Deep, pulsing pain that may spread to your ear, jaw, or neck. It can get worse when you lie down.
Swollen gum or pimple
A tender bump on the gum near the tooth, sometimes with pus or a bad taste when it drains.
Swollen face or jaw
Swelling in your cheek, jaw, or under your chin means the infection is spreading. Call today.
Pain when biting
The tooth feels tall or sore when you touch it or chew. This often means infection at the root.
Fever or feeling unwell
A fever, tiredness, or swollen glands in the neck are signs your body is fighting a spreading infection.
When it's an ER situation
Trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling that is spreading quickly, swelling near the eye, or a high fever. Go to the ER or call 911.
What we'll do today
Treating the infection at the source
- An abscess will not go away on its own. Even if it drains and the pain eases, the infection stays at the root and usually comes back.
- We examine the area and take X-rays to find which tooth is the source and how far the infection has spread.
- If there is a pocket of pus, we can drain it to relieve pressure. You will be numb, and most people feel relief right away.
- When antibiotics are indicated, we prescribe them. Antibiotics help control the spread, but they do not remove the source.
- To remove the source, we either clean out the tooth with a root canal or remove the tooth. We explain both options and the full price first.

Is a tooth abscess an emergency?
Yes. An abscess is an infection that can spread to the jaw and beyond. Call us to be seen today. If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading swelling, or a high fever, go to the ER or call 911.
Will antibiotics fix an abscess?
Not by themselves. Antibiotics can calm the infection and stop it from spreading, but the source is still inside the tooth. Without a root canal or extraction, the abscess usually returns.
Does draining an abscess hurt?
We numb the area first, so you should feel pressure but not sharp pain. Most people feel much better right after, because draining relieves the pressure that causes the throbbing.
Root canal or extraction — how do you decide?
If the tooth has enough healthy structure and the root is sound, a root canal can save it. If the tooth is badly broken down or cracked, removing it may be the better choice. We show you the X-rays and explain both options.
How much does abscess treatment cost?
The emergency visit is a flat $150 with exam and X-rays. A root canal is $1,200 and an extraction is $500, including the 3D scan. You get the full price in writing before we begin.
