Symptoms
What happened, and what to do before you arrive
A few simple steps on the way in can make the repair easier and give your tooth the best chance.
Chipped tooth
Save any pieces you can find in a clean container. Rinse your mouth with warm water. A small chip is usually smoothed or bonded at the same visit.
Broken tooth
Rinse gently and press clean gauze on any bleeding. A cold pack on the outside of your cheek helps with swelling. Avoid chewing on that side.
Cracked tooth
Cracks often hurt when you bite or release. Chew on the other side and avoid very hot or cold food. Cracks can spread, so do not wait too long.
Lost crown
Keep the crown and bring it with you. You can hold it in place with temporary dental cement from the pharmacy. Never use super glue or any household glue.
Lost filling
The tooth may feel sharp or sensitive. Temporary filling material from the pharmacy can cover it until your visit. Keep the area clean.
Knocked-out tooth
Call right away. Hold it by the crown, not the root. Rinse gently if dirty, do not scrub. Put it back in the socket, or keep it in milk or in your cheek. The first hour matters most.

Repairing or protecting your tooth
- We examine the tooth and take the X-rays we need to see whether the break reaches the nerve or the root.
- Small chips are often smoothed or bonded with tooth-colored filling material the same day.
- Larger breaks are protected with a filling or a temporary crown so you can eat comfortably while a permanent crown is made.
- A lost crown that is still in good shape can often be cleaned and re-cemented at the same visit.
- If the nerve is exposed we may start a root canal, and if the tooth cannot be saved we can remove it. You get the full price before we begin.

Common questions
Can a broken tooth be fixed the same day?
In most cases, yes. Chips and small breaks are often repaired at the same visit. Larger breaks get a same-day filling or temporary crown so you leave comfortable, with the permanent crown to follow.
My crown fell off — is that an emergency?
It is not usually dangerous, but it should be seen soon. The tooth underneath can be sensitive and may break or shift. Bring the crown with you. Use only temporary dental cement to hold it in place, never glue.
How much does it cost to fix a chipped tooth?
The emergency visit is a flat $150 with exam and X-rays. A filling to repair a chip is $300. If the tooth needs a crown, that is $1,600. You get the full price before any work starts.
What if my tooth was knocked out?
Call us immediately. Handle the tooth by the crown, rinse gently, and try to put it back in the socket. If you cannot, keep it in milk or in your cheek and come in right away. The best chance of saving it is within the first hour.
Will I lose the tooth?
Most broken teeth can be saved. It depends on how deep the break goes and whether the root is cracked. After the exam and X-rays we tell you honestly what can be saved and what your options are.
